A warning: own your domain

Search "best hotel website design" and you get galleries of hero images. A hotel website is judged by a guest who has usually already seen the hotel on a booking platform, and who has come to the hotel's own site to decide whether to book there instead. So this page looks at twelve admired hotel sites the way that guest does: what the design idea is, how you book, whether there is a reason to book here, and what our free hotel website grader says about the code underneath. Every site was visited on 10 October 2026, and each entry says what is worth stealing.

The finding: the photography is excellent everywhere, and the reason to book direct is missing almost everywhere. All twelve lead with images, video or illustration, and eleven put a booking button on the first screen. None shows a nightly rate on the homepage. Two put a number on booking direct. Nine showed a first-time visitor a cookie or promotion notice, five of them large enough to cover the page. And one of the most praised hotel websites of the last decade no longer exists as its own site.

Booking in the first screen

Ace Hotel's homepage on 10 October 2026: Welcome to Ace Hotel in heavy type over a pool at dusk, with a booking bar in the header holding location, check-in and check-out dates, guests, a promo code field and an orange Book Now button
Ace Hotel, 10 October 2026. A small privacy notice in the corner was removed for this capture.

Ace Hotel puts the booking engine's first step in the header: location, check-in and check-out already filled with tonight's dates, guests, a promo code field and Book Now, above everything else on the page. Below the fold it gives the reason to use it, in a number: "Members save up to 30% on our Classic Rate when you book direct, with early check-in, late checkout, and easy changes," plus 50 dollars for its restaurants and bars. It was the only site of the twelve that scored 100 on our grader and also marked up every hotel in its structured data, eight Hotel entries with addresses. Steal the date bar; it turns "I wonder what it costs" into one click.

The Hoxton's homepage on 10 October 2026: Welcome to The Hoxton over a lit Christmas tree, with a search bar for location, dates, guests and a code, a Find a Room button, and Why Book With Us? in the top navigation
The Hoxton, 10 October 2026. A cookie banner covering the lower half of the first screen was removed for this capture.

The Hoxton does the same with a search bar laid across the hero, and it is the only site here with Why Book With Us? as an item in its main navigation. The homepage says "book direct on thehoxton.com and you'll unlock our best rates, plus a few extra perks," and runs a festive offer of up to £150 of food and drink credit. What it does not do is say how much better the best rate is. A guest who has just seen the room on a booking platform wants that number.

Freehand's homepage on 10 October 2026: a hotel room with a window seat, overlaid with a card reading 20% off stays, stay 3+ nights and save, a Book Now button, and a red Book a Room tab fixed to the right edge
Freehand, 10 October 2026.

Freehand makes the direct-booking discount the hero itself: "20% off stays, stay 3+ nights and save," with a red Book a Room tab fixed to the right edge of the screen. Further down it adds 25 percent off suites with a code, and a post titled "Book direct & save more." It is the least glamorous first screen of the twelve and the most honest about what the website is for. Bookings go to Mews.

One idea, held

The Standard's homepage on 10 October 2026: a list of cities in large white type, High Line NYC, East Village NYC, Bangkok, Miami Beach, Ibiza and more, beside a night photograph of a hotel window
The Standard, 10 October 2026. A cookie bar along the bottom was removed for this capture.

The Standard uses its list of cities as the hero: High Line, East Village, Bangkok, Miami Beach, Ibiza, Hua Hin, Maldives, London and on down the screen, set large beside a photograph of a lit window at night. It is the best answer here to the question every hotel group has, which is how to choose a property, and it doubles as a statement of reach. A round red Book Now button sits in the corner; bookings go to its own booking site.

1 Hotels' homepage on 10 October 2026: an aerial video of an autumn forest in red, orange and green, with the 1 Hotels logo, a Check Availability button and a Mission Membership tab
1 Hotels, 10 October 2026. A cookie window was removed for this capture.

1 Hotels holds one idea, nature, in a single aerial video of an autumn forest, and repeats it property by property below: reclaimed Domino Sugar Factory wood in Brooklyn, 56,000 plants on the façade in Nashville. The homepage runs a fall offer of "up to 40% off and a hotel credit." Check Availability opens a panel on the page rather than sending you away.

Hotel Esencia's homepage on 10 October 2026: the hotel name in blue capitals, a menu set in small italic capitals, and an illustration of a white villa among palm fronds, with a Reserve My Room button
Hotel Esencia, 10 October 2026.

Hotel Esencia, on the Riviera Maya, opens on an illustration rather than a photograph: a white villa among palm fronds, under a menu set in small italic capitals like a printed card. It is the most distinctive front door of the twelve, and it behaves like a beach house, which is the point. Reserve My Room goes to Simplebooking, and the footer offers room reservations on WhatsApp, which for a Mexican resort is the channel guests actually use. Our grader marked it down only for missing Hotel structured data.

Aman's homepage on 10 October 2026: the Aman wordmark and a Reserve button above a full-width video still of a dark horse running
Aman, 10 October 2026. A cookie window was removed for this capture.

Aman is almost all video, a horse running under "Rituals of Joy," with the wordmark and one Reserve button. The useful lesson is under the surface: Reserve opens a booking flow inside aman.com, so a guest never meets a differently styled engine on another domain. Most hotels here hand the guest to a vendor's page at the moment of decision; Aman does not.

Single properties that answer the real question

Post Ranch Inn's homepage on 10 October 2026: an aerial photograph of the inn's houses on a green Big Sur ridge, with a banner across the top reading Highway 1 is now fully open from both Northern and Southern California
Post Ranch Inn, 10 October 2026. A cookie bar along the bottom was removed for this capture.

Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur leads with the question its guests actually have, which is not "how nice is it" but "can I get there." The banner across the top reads "Highway 1 is now fully open from both Northern and Southern California! The iconic drive to Big Sur awaits. Book Your Stay." Two phone numbers sit on the homepage, the room types are described by what you see from them, and Reserve Your Room goes to SynXis. With Ace, it was the only site to score 100 on our grader.

Blackberry Farm's homepage on 10 October 2026: Golden Hours Await in large serif type over rocking chairs on a porch facing autumn hills, with an Explore Each Season button
Blackberry Farm, 10 October 2026.

Blackberry Farm in Tennessee changes its headline with the season, "Golden Hours Await" over rocking chairs facing autumn hills, so the reason to come is always this month's. The address and three phone numbers are on the homepage. Book Now goes to its own reservations site.

Hotel Saint Cecilia's page on 10 October 2026: a banner reading Recently awarded 1 MICHELIN Key above the hotel's name and a Book Now link, over a photograph of striped umbrellas around a small pool
Hotel Saint Cecilia, Austin, 10 October 2026. A promotion window and a cookie bar were removed for this capture.

Hotel Saint Cecilia in Austin is a page on its group's site, and it carries the clearest book-direct offer of the single properties: Texans who book direct with the code LOCALSONLY get a preferred rate and perks. The award goes in a banner, "Recently awarded 1 MICHELIN Key," and the first visit opens a window for its October suite weekends. It is a good offer, shown at the wrong moment: a pop-up is the first thing a new guest sees.

The Ned's homepage on 10 October 2026: a guest room with a scalloped headboard under the line Interiors inspired by Old World Glamour, the Book Now button top right, and below it the line Meet, work and have a good time in our global collection of hotels, clubs, restaurants and spas
The Ned, 10 October 2026. A cookie window was removed for this capture.

The Ned now runs from London to New York, Washington and Doha, and the homepage says what it is in one line under the slideshow: "Meet, work & have a good time in our global collection of hotels, clubs, restaurants & spas." That sentence does the job of a whole About page. Book Now goes to SynXis. Our grader found no H1 heading and no Hotel structured data on the homepage.

The one that disappeared

What citizenm.com shows on 10 October 2026: a Marriott Bonvoy header with sign-in, above a citizenM lobby photograph and the line a new breed of hotels in the center of it all, Marriott Bonvoy welcomes citizenM
citizenM, 10 October 2026: citizenm.com redirects to this page on marriott.com. A privacy notice sits in the corner.

citizenM was, for years, on every list like this one. On 10 October 2026, citizenm.com answers with a permanent redirect to a brand page on marriott.com, under a Marriott Bonvoy header: "Marriott Bonvoy welcomes citizenM, tech-forward hotels with style, location, and value." The design language survives in the photography. The website, as a thing the brand controls, does not. For an independent hotel the lesson is simple: own your domain, your booking path and your guest list, because they are the parts that cannot be redesigned back.

What our grader found

Our hotel website grader checks eight things in a homepage's code: a clear booking call to action, a mobile viewport, lazy-loaded images, Hotel structured data, a page title, a meta description, an H1 and HTTPS. On 10 October 2026, Ace Hotel and Post Ranch Inn scored 100, four sites scored 85, and six scored 75.

Every site passed the booking button, the viewport, the title and HTTPS. The common miss was structured data: ten of the twelve homepages carry no Hotel, LodgingBusiness or LocalBusiness markup at all, and Post Ranch passed with a generic LocalBusiness block; only Ace marks its hotels up as Hotel. For the hotel groups that is defensible on the homepage, as long as each property page carries it. For a single property such as Hotel Esencia or Blackberry Farm it is a gap, because it is the markup that tells search engines and AI assistants the address, the type of place and how to book. Three sites lazy-loaded none of their images, two had no H1, and Hotel Saint Cecilia's page had no meta description.

What to steal, in order of value

  1. Give the reason to book direct, with a number. Ace (up to 30 percent for members) and Freehand (20 percent off three nights) did. Ten did not. The commission a hotel saves is the budget for the reason; what an OTA booking costs a hotel has the arithmetic.
  2. Put the first step of booking in the first screen. Dates in the header (Ace) or across the hero (The Hoxton) beat a button that opens a blank form.
  3. Keep the booking path on your own domain where you can. Aman's flow never leaves aman.com; The Hoxton, The Standard and Blackberry Farm use their own subdomains. Our comparison of hotel booking engines covers which engines allow it.
  4. Answer the guest's real first question. For Post Ranch it is the road. For a city hotel it may be which neighbourhood. For a group it is which city (The Standard).
  5. Skip the pop-up on the first screen. Nine of twelve showed one. A promotion is worth more on the room page than in front of the homepage.
  6. Add Hotel structured data to every property page. It costs an afternoon, and eleven of these twelve homepages lacked it.

Where we fit

We design and build hotel websites around the list above, and the prices are published on the hotel website design page: 12,000 dollars for a site on our Aurelia hotel template with your brand and your real booking engine wired in, from 30,000 dollars for a custom design, and from 75,000 dollars for a multi-property platform. For what happens to these sites over time, our own hotel work is written up with the live sites read the same way: The London West Hollywood, whose booking button has stayed in the same corner since 2018, and The Maven. And for why the booking platforms so often look cheaper than the hotel's own site, read why Booking.com looks cheaper than the hotel website.

Frequently asked questions

A fast first screen that shows the place, a booking button in the same corner on every page, and a reason to book on the hotel's own site rather than through a travel agency. Of twelve admired hotel sites checked on 10 October 2026, all twelve led with photography, video or illustration, and eleven had a booking button on the first screen. Only two stated a numbered reason to book direct, Ace Hotel (up to 30 percent off for members) and Freehand (20 percent off three nights or more), and none showed a nightly rate on the homepage.

Showing a from-rate somewhere before the booking engine helps, because a guest comparing hotels on a phone assumes a missing number is a worse one. None of the twelve sites in this teardown showed a nightly room rate on the homepage on 10 October 2026; the prices that did appear were offers and credits, such as The Hoxton's up to 150 pounds of food and drink credit. The room page is the better place for a from-rate than the homepage, as long as it is live from the same inventory.

There is no single answer, and the engine does not predict the design. Among the twelve: SynXis serves The Ned, Post Ranch Inn and Hotel Saint Cecilia; Ace Hotel uses TravelClick; Freehand uses Mews; Hotel Esencia uses Simplebooking; The Hoxton, The Standard and Blackberry Farm send guests to booking sites on their own subdomains; and Aman runs its booking flow inside aman.com. Our comparison of hotel booking engines covers the vendors and their published prices.

It is schema.org markup in the page's code that tells search engines and AI assistants that the page is a hotel, with its name, address and other facts. It feeds rich results and map cards and makes the facts easier to quote. On 10 October 2026, only Ace Hotel marked its properties up as Hotel on the homepage, and Post Ranch Inn passed our grader with a generic LocalBusiness block. For a brand with many hotels, Organization markup on the homepage and Hotel markup on each property page is the right split; for a single property, the homepage should carry it.

It depends on the number of properties, the booking integration and how custom the design is. SUUR publishes its prices on the hotel website design page: 12,000 dollars for a site on our Aurelia hotel template with your brand and your booking engine wired in, from 30,000 dollars for a custom design, and from 75,000 dollars for a multi-property platform. The free hotel website grader scores the site you have now in about a minute.
